The book “The 5 Second Rule” by Mel Robbins came to my attention when I read the summary and saw all of the possibilities that were promised by learning this “simple” rule or “metacognition hack” of sorts. My sister in law and I decided to commit to doing a weekly book club together with this book, just her and I. She lives 3 states away from me, so this book club was held over the phone or video call a night or two a week.
It took us longer than it should have to get through this book together, but that was mostly due to scheduling conflicts. In reality, this book could be read in a week by someone who has the time to commit to little reading each day.
Ironically, this book would help someone read more often if their goal is to do just that!
Mel lays all of her cards on the table in this book where she opens up about all of the low points in her life that lead her to the place where she had no choice but to shift gears. In a split second decision to change her way of thinking and facing problems, Mel unlocked a new level of metacognition where she took control of her mind, and ultimately her life.
After over one million copies of her book being sold around the world, as well as a successful day time talk show, it’s hard to deny the power of this rule she came up with. Her simple rule or tool as she also refers to it, is universal and not only something for aspiring CEOs or other big wig type folks. Her book is for the mommas struggling to keep their days organized, individuals who have just come out of bad relationships and are looking for the push to get themselves back out there, pr anyone looking to get their physical health back in order.
I don’t know about you, but I have a lot planned for 2023. By a lot, I mean big personal changes as well as goals I’ve been meaning to crush. Mel emphasizes on the fact of “Why not start today? There’s not going to be a better time than now to do the things you’ve been making excuses not to do. Life is too short to wait another day to live the life you’ve always dreamed of living.” Not a direct quote from her book, but a paraphrasing from one of the first few chapters.
Be sure to have a highlighter or pen ready as you read through this book. There are so many great quotes and take aways that are worth marking so that you can come back to them when you need a little push back in the right direction.
I hope you enjoy Mel’s book as much as I did!
Do you have another self-help/motivational book that you’ve read that has changed your life for the better? Tell me about it in the comments so I can add it to my TBR (to be read) list!
